My brother loves going to the beach, he just hates returning to the office on Mondays. He has tried video conferencing, but when the “cat’s away, the mice will play.” He has asked me to look into a robot that can take his place, so the “Fat Cat” can play while his mice stay (chained to their desks).
This weekend I even received a 3am email from my brother about a video game company that uses a robot as a stand-in boss when their CEO travels to meetings, lunch, or just oversleeps. Yes, now a $15,000 mechanical overlord can impart his vision, ideas, and even write your annual review without blinking an eye. This mechanized wonder is the brainchild of a company called AnyBots. While AnyBot looks like a Segway scooter pulling a head on a broom stick, it has plenty of equipment including cameras, microphones and speakers that are controlled via the Internet by one’s laptop. Essentially, it is like my son’s remote controlled car with a sophisticated web cam on top of it.
In my opinion, my brother will have to wait for either the prices to come way down or an enhanced list of features before enjoying the surf a day longer. According to the video game CEO, Richard Garriott, he likes the product so much that he used AnyBot to take the place of his mother at his wedding. Hmmm… a robot mother in-law, now that’s a billion dollar idea!
