Westworld: The Original Cowboy Robot…

The reviews are in “Cowboys & Aliens” is a hit, having all the ingredients for success – movie stars, gunslingers, and robots.   This formula was first created in 1973 with the release of Westworld starring Yul Brynner .

Westworld plays on humans’ appetite for debauchery, as it introduces us to Delos an adult only amusement party that is filled with androids to delight our fantasies. There are three worlds: Medieval, Roman and West.  Guests pay a $1,000 a day (or $10,000 2011 currency) to explore the limits of their dark side to kill and have relations with the robots of their choice.  Delos’ tagline is, “have we got a vacation for you…”  All is well, until a computer virus turns the robots on the humans and then, well, you know what happens next…

We go to the movies to escape the mundane for  an hour or two, living our wildest dreams on screen. Sometimes we admire 007 and other times people like Forrest Gump make us cry. Then there is the rare opportunity that we root for the other side, the robots, to remind us that these fixations are better left in the dark.
