Last week, Microsoft’s Robotics Developer Studio, announced a new free download or kit for the Xbox Kinect system enabling developers to program their cell phones as robots using Kinect’s technology as the eyes and ears of the platform. The Kinect game accessory, which provides live video game actions through your full-body gestures, has been embraced by the hacking community, is now going a step further by extending into robotics with more intelligent smart phones “to perform sophisticated gesture recognition for natural user interfaces, autonomous navigation and many other tasks.” And you thought an iPhone was cool…
While this could bring great advances to science by shrinking the machines to palm size devices, it all depends on who is controlling the information. Just like the recent scandal the same cell phone that brings us closer can make us loose our precious privacy and liberty.
