Gilad Shalit Prisoner Swap: Inject Terrorists with Tracking Chips…

What is the price for freedom? If you live in Israel it is thousand to one.  Let me repeat, Israel will be releasing over a thousand of the most heinous human beings in existence in exchange for the life of one of its soliders.  Sgt. Gilad Shalit has been a captive of Hamas for over a five years, and tomorrow we hope to see him in the arms of his family.  It is impossible to comment on the morality of the “deal” with the villains of Gaza, but there are pro-active steps that Israel can be doing to track these former prisoners.

VeriChip is a new injectable RFID chip that enables one to locate people in the same way that pets are tagged.  The chip is completely safe and approved by the Food & Drug Administration.   In fact, some employers, like the ones featured in the above CNN story, are using them on their employees to ensure the safety of sensitive data and funds. If it is kosher enough for corporate America, it  is certainly an acceptable deterrent against a convicted terrorist.   Using technology to stop repeat offenders is not just wise, but the most humane and responsible actions a government can undertake to protect its citizens in this situation.

Today, the families of the terror victims are petitioning Israel’s Supreme Court to halt the trade. It is heart wrenching to listen to their emotional appeals – a mother without a daughter, a son without parents, a brother whose sibling was so brutally maimed that he had to use dental records to identify him.  Tomorrow, we long to see the reunification that will heal not just one family’s wounds, but a country’s.  The sages remind us that ‘if you save a person’s life, you save the world.’  We pray for this to be true, and wish that chips run through these killers’ veins instead of hate.
