Boldly Goes Where No Human Has Gone Before…

It started out as a 6 month mission, now after 3 years of driving across the desolate Mars landscape the rover Opportunity has reached the massive Endeavour crater. I suggest everyone checkout the latest photos of the rover missions at Nasa.com.

While the Obama administration no longer feels we (humans) have the “right stuff” with the demolition of the Space Shuttle program, some are bucking this trend. Across America there is a new fleet of Robot Astronauts, built by our ingenuity.  Meet the new heros of the space age Spirit, Opportunity and now Curiosity.

Weighing in at $2.5 billion, Curiosity is the size of of a mini-Cooper with a 5 ton laboratory on his back.  The count-down has begun with Curiosity set to blast off this November to begin an 8 month mission to the red planet.  The mission is no less than to find life on mars, or the evidence of organic matter.  The costs are pretty high as there is only a 40% chance of reaching the planet successfully.  A pretty steep gamble for the debt-ridden NASA in the search of tiny green men…
