Lego Bricks Take Over Space…
While the entire world was gasping last week about S&P’s cut of the world’s only Superpower debt rating , three couragous mini-figures set sail for Jupiter. Since the Obama administration killed the Space Shuttle program, NASA has been left looking for a few good men. Move over future John Glenns, because Lego has got us covered to boldly go where no brick has gone before…
Last Friday, aboard NASA’s Juno deep-space probe, a five-year mission to Jupiter, three specially designed aluminum Lego Minifigures boarded the spacecraft. The purpose of this mission is to increase brick sales ever where as six years imagine their own creations in space. Secondary reseach goals inclide to better understand Jupiter’s “structure, atmosphere, magnetosphere and history” NASA says the inclusion of the minifugures are to engage kids to “explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and improve their understanding of our solar system.” The cost of the figures is over $15K. You can follow their travels of the minifugures (Jupiter, Juno and Galileo Galilei) on Legospace.com ( www.legospace.com ).
Some interesting facts about the trip:
- SPACECRAFT COST: $ 1 billion
- DISTANCE: 2,800 million km
- TIME: 5 years to Juno Jupiter’s north pole to start the first of 33 orbits at speeds of up to 160,000 mph
